Finding the focal length of a curved (concave) mirror is usually taught through the use of ray diagrams. Students typically draw out a concave mirror on a sheet of paper and then draw multiple parallel lines that strike the concave mirror and reflect back onto a single point (the focal point) as a result of the law of reflection. Optics & mirrors kits are purchased for students to determine this experimentally. However, there is no investigation of the relationship between the curvature of the mirror and the focal length. By using 3D printing to develop customizable curved mirrors, students will be actively engaged in building curved mirrors of different dimensions in order to analyze trends between focal distance and mirror curvature.
