Lesson Plans - Crystal Growth

The study of crystals, crystal formation and how these relate to minerals and rocks is a challenging topic for students. Three-dimensional crystal shapes are difficult to observe in rock samples due to their small size and the mixtures of crystals that exist in most rocks. Students are able to grow crystals but their size (and quality) limit the students’ ability to do a detailed analysis of the three-dimensional shapes. With a 3D printer students are able to produce crystals and crystal systems large enough to hold in their hands for examining in greater detail!
